  • Welcome to NorMet

As a hospital association, we are honored to represent the interests and viewpoints of our member hospitals and support them in their mission of providing excellent and compassionate patient care. Our 30 member hospitals and numerous associate members are located in the seven county Hudson Valley region just north of New York City.

Our members are as diverse as the communities they serve, representing specialty hospitals, community hospitals and trauma centers; small critical access hospitals a large teaching institution; and urban, suburban and rural hospitals.

NorMet is a collective voice for these hospitals. We advocate at the state & federal level on behalf of our members regarding issues common to all healthcare institutions as well as those unique to the Hudson Valley.

Our efforts are directed toward three main focus areas:

    • Quality of Care
    • Advocacy
    • Emergency Preparedness

We hope you enjoy visiting our website and learning more about NorMet and our members.

    A Word from Our President

    Neil Abitabilo, President

Every day, regardless of a stark economic environment, hospitals throughout the seven county Hudson Valley region north of New York City continue to provide quality medical care to the nearly 3 million people who live and work in our communities.

Simply put, the purpose of NorMet is to help our member hospitals fulfill their mission of providing excellent health care to the people in the Hudson Valley. We are proud of the high quality, compassionate care provided by our member hospitals.

In parallel to the economy over the past few years, hospitals have seen increasing numbers of people come to their emergency rooms who need acute care, yet are unable to pay for their care. Some are uninsured, and others who do have insurance often cannot afford their co-pays and deductibles. On top of that, many employers, particularly small businesses, are finding it so difficult to pay for health insurance that they simply cannot offer it as a benefit to employees. While patients’ ability to pay declines, and costs increase, hospital operating margins continue to suffer, keeping hospitals throughout the region and state among the most financially vulnerable in the nation. This means that profitability that could be reinvested in technology and other systems to further benefit patient care is slim to nonexistent.

While non-profit hospitals lose money, the health insurance companies, and pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers continue to have record profits. Further, unions would rather lose members through employee layoffs than accept a greater good of slightly lower pay increases for all employees.

Adding insult to injury, medical malpractice insurance rates in New York State continue to escalate. Everything except malpractice reform has hit the gavel of legislation or the arm of regulation in Albany. All of this makes the cost of doing business for physicians and hospitals in our state a business model that is destined to fail if the health care system is not overhauled.

For all of these reasons, we support the need for responsible health care reform, at the regional, state and national levels. NorMet and our member hospitals are doing our part by working to help patients receive the right care at the right time, by making systems as efficient and streamlined as possible, thereby improving patient outcomes while reducing costs. We are proud of the educational programs and support activities that NorMet provides to assist our members, and we are especially excited about our new venture, the NorMet Patient Safety Institute.

Through the NorMet Patient Safety Institute, we will work with our members to strengthen their ability to incorporate evidence-based patient care, thereby reducing medical errors, and further improving patient outcomes. We are happy you found us online, and we invite you to regularly visit our website for new postings. On behalf of the NorMet staff and our member hospitals, we wish you good health!

    Sincerely,

    Neil Abitabilo
